Sharing stories from Miracles in Montanare: Ten Years in Tuscany on the Northwest Italian Radio Show feels a bit like I’m reading the book to the world. As Publisher, Ethan, and I described vignette after vignette, co-hosts David Madrid and Tony La Stella (both with Italian heritage) became enthusiastic fans. They get it. They know there is a story of their own, waiting to be written in Italy.
The opportunity to share Miracles in Montanare to the masses was an important opportunity but it turns out the two most important listeners sat on my left and right. I believe my favorite question of late is this: What are you waiting for? Nearly everyone I’ve had a chance to ask has said the same thing. “I’d love to do that, but how?”
Everything starts with permission. The nod you give your imagination to quell dismissive thoughts is a priority. Get out of here. You don’t have to go to Italy but please, leave and put yourself in a place that relies on needing to learn new skills to survive. I often (nearly every day) let my mind take me back to those first days in Montanare when there was no option but to try. Those small successes help me keep perspective when something challenges me here on native soil.
